Previous to this remake few people would have said that Demon’s Souls was their favourite From game but that was largely because in its original state it was difficult to obtain and riven by performance issues. That is no longer the case, indeed the fast-loading of the PlayStation 5’s SSD instantly removes one of the greatest frustrations of the original, as death requires but a few seconds wait before you return to the action. FromSoftware has had nothing directly to do with this remake, with development instead being handled by American team Bluepoint Games, who worked on the excellent Shadow Of The Colossus remake. TR88 is very similar, in that although the visuals have been recreated from scratch the underlying level design and gameplay is almost identical to the original. There are some changes to help modernise the game, particularly in terms of the camera and the controls, but they’re still relatively minor. Two years after the launch of PS5, the console offers enough games to be a tempting option for undecided buyers.

Enter the fog, go up, kill the cultists to break the first chain. Keep moving through the ledge fighting Gold Skeletons, you will reach the third Fog Door. Take the stairs, beware of the black phantom and face the Fool’s Idol. Return to the entrance of the second door, and head down to where the lava was, now head to the accessible stairs on the other side. Go down the stairs outside of the first tower, and turn back killing all the Enemies to rescue Ostrava, of Boletaria.
There’s still an annoyingly common tendency to use a shove attack when I don’t mean to, and I wish the developers had done something to better explain World Tendency to newcomers. But those nitpicks notwithstanding, Bluepoint did an excellent job of updating Demon’s Souls to modern standards without changing the core of its gameplay. Customers praise the graphics quality of the game, describing them as absolutely beautiful, with one customer highlighting its smooth performance at 1800p 60fps. Perfect and hone your skills in combat – know when to push forward and when to bide your time, as with each missed swing and careless mistake, you risk losing the very souls you’ve worked so hard to collect. The rewards for slaying the strongest foes are immense though, and death does not mean the end – it’s just another state of being.
All keys, rescued NPCs, and warp points are reset when starting a new game, so finish your exploration and collection of items before defeating this area boss. The original’s poor four direction rolling system made dodging enemy attacks hard. It was one of the things that increased the game’s difficulty in a frustrating way. Thankfully, players can breathe a sigh of relief because omnidirectional rolling is in the remake.
World Tendency’s level of light or darkness would cause certain events to happen as the tendency changed. And when played online, the actions of all players in aggregate affect the tendency, which can make the game unpredictable. But there is one small change that veteran Demon’s Souls players will welcome. It’s not uncommon for FromSoftware fans to experiment with magic, bows, or even daggers, but sometimes, nothing feels quite as comfortable as a solid sword.

Demon’s Souls best starting class might not be the game’s most complex – but some are better suited for new players than others. The Blue-Eyed Knights drop a great weapon for the beginning of the game, the claymore. This strength weapon requires a good amount of levels to use, but it is well worth it. It is also worth the inevitable grind for players who are seeking to use it. Demon’s Souls is set in the cursed kingdom of Boletaria where a powerful demonic entity known as The Old One unleashes a deathly black fog that begins to engulf all of the land. A host of other demons and unholy creatures also appear, destroying the living and turning them into soulless monsters.
While Dark Souls is a spiritual successor to Demon’s Souls, it doesn’t quite fill the gap that a direct connection to the original could. The plot of a sequel would have plenty of potential entry points, especially given the upcoming parallel universe we’re going to see in Elden Ring Nightreign. However, there’s one very clear and accessible starting point for a Demon’s Souls 2, and that’s through the sixth Archstone to The Northern Limit. While a lot of people want to play the remake, it was unfortunately rebuilt from the ground up exclusively for PS5 so there isn’t likely a chance we’ll see it on PS4. As time goes on the PS4 will eventually lose support and fade out so there’s a very low chance the remake will make it to PS4. It was a remake of the original 2009 release, which found surprising success thanks to word-of-mouth among fans.
Unfortunately, despite a Demon’s Souls 2 being theoretically possible, it’s very unlikely it ever gets made due to Sony owning the Demon’s Souls IP. The original Demon’s Souls was developed by FromSoftware, but it was published by Sony exclusively for the PlayStation 3. Sony owns the Demon’s Souls IP and published the 2020 remake developed by Bluepoint Games. This creates a unique situation where Sony owns the IP, but FromSoftware owns the creative DNA (combat systems, world-building style, etc).
After your first run you will need to focus on all the collectibles in the game, while getting through the story a second and third time for Rings, Spells and Miracles. This of course does not include the multiplayer aspects, which should add at least another 100 or so hours of gameplay in most cases, and likely more if you are a Souls fan who likes to co op and pvp a lot. Sound effects are excellent, and the sounds that spells make are simply fantastic. I could listen to them all day, and players will get a huge dose of nostalgia as they are summoned into another player’s world to the ever familiar chime. No complaints here, but you will note this means some sounds are different from what you remember. First, the rolling of the game is still really bad, even though it was improved from 4 directions to 8.
I need to give a special mention as well to the new ability to send items to your storage box without having to return to the Nexus. And then you’d also have to trek back to the archstone just so you could offload any unnecessary items. This is an elegant fix that still keeps the inventory management without any of the frustration.
